About Melanoma Treatment

Melanoma is one of the four most common types of skin cancer. Australia also happens to have some of the highest incidences of Melanoma diagnosed in nearly 1 in 10 of all cancer. It can occur as a result of genetic predisposition or from increased exposure to UV radiation. Symptoms usually present themselves at an early stage as changes in colour, shape or growth of moles anywhere on the body and can spread quire rapidly.

All forms of Melanoma should be surgically removed. Each patient needs to be reviewed by our doctor and an appropriate treatment and on-going skin care plan is developed to suit your specific case.

Our Doctor has received advanced training in detection and removal of skin cancers. Typically, she will remove the suspected area of skin along with a good margin of normal skin. The specimen will be sent away for pathology laboratory assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is melanoma?

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that develops from pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. It can appear anywhere on the skin and, if detected early, is highly treatable.

Is melanoma genetic or hereditary?

Most melanomas are sporadic. A family history of melanoma increases risk; a small percentage of cases involve inherited predisposition. A specialist or genetic clinic can advise if genetic testing is appropriate.

How do I know if a mole might be melanoma?

Look for the ABCDE signs: Asymmetry, irregular Border, multiple or uneven Colours, Diameter greater than about 6 mm (or any growth), and Evolving shape, size or colour. Any new or changing lesion should be evaluated by a skin clinician.

What happens during a melanoma consultation at Nitai?

At Nitai, you can expect a thorough skin check performed by a qualified skin doctor, including dermoscopy (magnified skin inspection). If a suspicious lesion is found, Nitai arranges a biopsy (often an excisional biopsy) to obtain tissue for histopathology. A detailed consultation allows you to understand your skin concerns and seek suitable remedial solutions.

What types of biopsies are used to diagnose melanoma?

The most common is an excisional biopsy (removing the whole lesion with a small margin). Punch biopsies or incisional biopsies may be used in some situations. The biopsy determines Breslow thickness and other pathology factors that drive treatment.

Does Nitai provide surgical removal or only skin-checks and referrals?

Nitai’s skin cancer clinic offers skin checks, dermoscopy, biopsies and minor surgical procedures under medical supervision. For more complex melanoma surgery (for example with sentinel node biopsy or wider resections), Nitai’s clinicians will arrange referral or co-management with surgical oncology/collegiate services as needed. (Please contact Nitai to confirm the specific pathway for each case.)

What follow-up and surveillance are recommended after treatment?

Follow-up schedules depend on stage. For early melanoma: regular skin checks (doctor-conducted and self-exams). For higher-stage disease: more frequent clinical review and possibly imaging. Lifelong skin surveillance is often advised because patients are at higher risk of new skin cancers.

How can I reduce my melanoma risk?

Sun protection (broad-spectrum sunscreen, protective clothing, seeking shade), avoiding tanning beds, and regular skin checks (self and professional) are the main prevention strategies. People with lots of moles, fair skin, or a family history should be particularly vigilant.

Can Nitai coordinate multidisciplinary care?

Yes. Nitai clinicians work with surgical oncologists, dermatopathologists, medical oncologists and allied health professionals and will refer or co-manage patients as needed to ensure access to guideline-based care. Confirm with Nitai for specific referral pathways.

What should I bring to my first appointment about a suspicious mole?

Bring any photos showing lesion changes, details of symptoms (bleeding, itching, growth), prior pathology reports (if applicable), and a list of medications and medical history. This helps the clinician triage and plan the next steps quickly.

How do I book a melanoma skin check at Nitai?
