About Radiofrequency Mole Removal Surgery

Radiofrequency (RF) Surgery Is A Procedure Used For The Removal Of Moles And Small Skin Growths. High Frequency Radiowaves Are Channelled Through An Electrode Tip To Cut Away The Mole, Or Used To Shave Down Moles Or Skin Lumps With Very Little To No Scarring.

Radiowaves Are Found In Bands Much Like Your FM Or AM Radio Station, But These Versions Can Be Used To Perform Skin Surgery And Remove Moles. Radiowaves, When Used On Skin, Are High-Frequency Wavelengths That Result In Very Little Heat. The Best Wavelength For Mole Removal Surgery Is 4.0 Megahertz (MHz). This Wavelength Is Able To Cut The Skin While Also Sealing Blood Vessels To Prevent Bleeding. Surrounding Tissue Is Unaffected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Skin excision with a scalpel vs RF surgery

RF surgery has many advantages over scalpel-based mole removal. Scalpels tend to cause a lot of bleeding and leave more scars.

We love RF mole removal surgery because:

  • No pressure is required, making surgery very precise
  • Wound is cauterised, stopping bleeding before it starts
  • More sterile environment
  • Leaves very little scarring
  • Tends to be safer (with well understood risk profile)
  • Less swelling and pain during healing
  • No stitches needed
  • Skin appearance is better after healing

What happens during the RF mole removal?

After having a consultation at our Melbourne mole removal clinic, your doctor will advise you on the best course of action, as different types of moles will suit different procedures. Not every mole will necessarily be a good candidate for RF mole removal.

The area surrounding your mole will be numbed with a local aesthetic injection. The high-frequency waves will be sent out of an electrode. The RF surgery process works by superheating the water inside cells until the cells rupture, a process which is then continued until all of the tissue has been removed.

The area around the wound will be bright pink and a scab will form over the top.

What are the risks of RF mole removal?

There are very few risks involved with RF mole removal, with the procedure being generally well-tolerated due to the anaesthetic. Only a slight tugging sensation should be felt as the mole is removed. There may be minor swelling, bruising and tenderness for a few day, but no bleeding should occur. The wound will then heal up, likely with almost no scarring or no scarring. This makes RF surgery for mole removal and excellent option for many patients.

What is RF surgery used for?

RF surgery can be used in:

  • Sculpting growths
  • Flattening birthmarks
  • Removing superficial carcinomas
  • Removing skin tags, warts and harmless skin growths
  • Performing skin biopsies
  • Debulking skin tumours
  • Cosmetic surgery around the eyes
  • Removing verrucas and ingrown toenails

How do I avoid getting a scar after mole removal surgery?

To help prevent a scar from forming, it is important to listen to the instructions your doctor gives. A silicone based gel can be used post-surgery to help reduce scarring. You should avoid having too much sun exposure, as the sun’s UV rays can damage the skin and delay the healing process.

What the research in radiofrequency mole removal says

In 2004 a research article was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology regarding radiofrequency surgery for treating skin lesions on sensitive and delicate areas of the body.

The study, Radiofrequency surgery-a safe, effective technique with well understood risks for sensitive areas of body, looked at 204 people who were treated with radiofrequency surgery on sensitive areas of the body including the eyelids, the periorbital area, the tip of the nose, nostrils, lips, in and around the mouth, tongue, oral mucosa, cheeks, ear canal, the ears, male and female genitalia, the groin, and on and around the nails.

The conditions being treated included:

  • Verrucae
  • Seborrhoeic and actinic keratoses
  • Dermatitis papulosa nigra
  • Milia
  • Moles
  • Molluscum contagiosum
  • Granuloma pyogenicum
  • Capillary haemangioma
  • Condyloma acuminata
  • Xanthelasma
  • Ear keloids
  • Acne scars
  • Trauma scars

Radiofrequency surgery was found to be an appropriate technique for operating on lesions found in sensitive and delicate parts of the body. This is due to far lower discomfort levels during and after treatments, far less bleeding, minimal scarring and the easy access to body folds and cavities to safely remove lesions using the thin bendable electrodes. Any risks are well understood.

The skin healed rapidly with negligible recurrence of lesions without charring or complications, and without causing pigmentation problems on skin or nails.

The conclusion was that radiofrequency surgery is a very safe technique for removing skin lesions(with well understood risk profile). To make an appointment to have your moles removed please contact our Melbourne mole removal clinic.
